I'm pretty sure if you tapped a Smart with a driver's license, you'd rip all the bodywork off right down to the chassis.

Smarts are actually ludicrously over-engineered; a big reason why they're so expensive.

I hope they are. When I went to Europe, I saw them all the time, but then I realized most cars there are tiny, so crashes must be ok.

The only (massively stupid) issue with them I've seen had to do with the immobilizer. The guy I knew who had one let the battery in his key fob die, and wasn't able to start the car otherwise. It came with a spare set of batteries, but they too were also dead. He ended up having to get it towed.

that's not really an issue localized to Smart cars though, that's immobilisers in general.

and it did it's job, it didn't let him drive away without a working key.
